Despite the stairs under his feet being rooted and steady, he still sways as if being sloshed by the ocean. Steve reaches out for the railing, grips it tight with paper white knuckles, and sucks in a harsh breath through his inflamed, swollen nostrils. If he hadn’t already emptied his stomach tonight, he could probably bend himself over and do it again. He won’t—or at least he believes he won’t—but the nausea still rises bitter and mean anyway.

Secret admirer au where Steve kept receiving anonymous love letters and developed a deep emotional attachment to E.M despite not knowing who they were.

When those letters stopped appearing in his locker, the world had ended with them. Steve didn't understand what he'd done wrong. He'd already broken up with Nancy, dropped Tommy and Carol, left the basketball and swim teams, and even switched his briefs to panties.

Steve felt sick in his stomach, knew he'd been abandoned, knew E.M had lost interest in him. He took a week off from school because of that, genuinely felt unwell and unable to leave his bed when his body was a sluggish burden.

With his parents having departed for another month-long business trip, it was just him and his cold empty house all over again, lonely and unwanted.

The next time Steve came to, he found himself spooned in a warm solid chest. Someone had sneaked into his house and his bed while he was asleep. When he tried to break free, he realized he'd been tied up and fear finally crept up on him.

"Sweet dreams, Bambi?" The unknown stranger asked, voice raspy and lips hot against his ear.

Steve shuddered involuntarily, gasping in disbelief because there was only one person out there would call him Bambi. It was too good to be true. And yet, warmth already started unfolding in his chest.

"E.M?" He whispered, wary and hopeful. He wanted to twist around to see the other boy's face, to make sure he'd at least have something to cling onto next time he was abandoned for good. But the arms around him just tightened further.

"Eddie Munson at your service," Eddie said quietly, and Steve froze. "I'm here now, Bambi." Eddie kissed his ear and temple. "You don't have to be alone anymore."

As Eddie allowed him to turn around, it took Steve no time at all to meet his boyfriend in a deep, tender kiss.

"Take me," he said after a while, trembling still. It wasn't fear, he told himself, it was happiness, gratitude. No one had ever loved him like this before. And he should feel lucky to have met Eddie.

"Gonna keep you," Eddie promised, smiling fondly. "My baby."
